The function and style of the kitchen, updated decades before, did not meet the current homeowners’ needs. They wanted an open floor plan that reflected the home’s mid-century past, while allowing them to live and entertain more effectively.
To create an open floor plan the load bearing walls had to be removed. A steel beam, installed to carry the load from one side of the room to the other, was left exposed and painted a charcoal gray for interest. In order to capture more storage a pantry was created, and to keep the space open the fridge is recessed into the wall.
Since the homeowners wanted no upper cabinetry floating walnut shelves were added to store dishware and add a focal point. Frameless cabinetry creates clean lines and the waterfall countertop on the island adds a contemporary touch, creating a modern space that feels warm and inviting with a mid-century quality.
