Design Intentions for 2026 | More of This, Less of That
As a new year begins, conversations around trends and intentions naturally follow. As designers, we have a few of our own. These are our top six hopes for the year ahead, principles that guide not only what spaces look like, but how they feel.
Tell us in the comment, what do you want more of and less of this year?
1. More Personality & Customization. Less Imitation.
Be unapologetically yourself. No one else can do you better. When you’re drawn to something truly unique, custom design allows your space to reflect exactly who you are without compromise.
To the left is the Portland Range hood, custom designed in copper and brass, and built by one oy our trusted artisans here in the Twin Cities.
2. More Layers, Pattern & Texture. Less Sterile Spaces.
Great design has depth. Thoughtful layering through color, texture, scale, and finish, adds richness and interest over time. Interiors should feel lived-in and evolving, not static. Rearranging, refreshing, and reinterpreting your space keeps it dynamic and engaging.
Quick tip, move your artwork around to instantly create a fresh new look.
3. More Color. Less Cold White & Gray.
We love color and the freedom it brings. Whether bold and expressive or subtle and nuanced, color has the power to transform a space. Trust what resonates with you, experiment thoughtfully, and remember: there is rarely just one right answer.
Reminder: Test color samples in larger swaths will help you to visualize what it will look like on an entire wall and remember that light, time of day, and other surrounding colors will inform how the color appears.
4. More Collected. Less Generic Decor.
The most meaningful interiors tell a story. Artwork discovered on travels, a treasured family heirloom, or a perfectly worn vintage find, these are the pieces that bring authenticity and soul to a home. Choose what you love, and let it shine.
5. More Historied Details. Less Trendy Accents.
You can never go wrong by leaning into details that feel historic and enduring. Whether it’s a thoughtfully chosen molding profile, a richly textured fabric, or a well-loved piece of furniture with a story to tell, these elements ground a space and give it soul.
Timeless design isn’t about recreating the past, it’s about honoring it. When tradition is layered with intention and care, it creates interiors that feel authentic, collected, and meant to last. Trends may come and go, but tradition has a way of always feeling relevant.
6. More Patience. Less Starting Without a Plan.
This one matters. Slow down, take the time to plan, and allow the process to unfold with intention. As an old saying reminds us, “One moment of patience may ward off great disaster.” We couldn’t agree more.
